Custom Tuning Vs Off-The-Shelf

Why the process matters more than the label.

Off-the-shelf tuning

An off-the-shelf file is a pre-written calibration for a vehicle type. It can work well when the vehicle is standard, healthy and the file comes from a competent source with proper testing behind it.

Custom tuning

Custom tuning is adjusted for the individual vehicle, its hardware, logs, dyno data and the owner's goals. It usually takes more time and should involve more testing.

Which is better?

Neither label guarantees quality. A good off-the-shelf file may be safer than a poor custom tune. A careful custom tuner may achieve better drivability, safety margins and results for modified vehicles.

When custom tuning matters most

Custom work matters more when the vehicle has hybrid turbos, injectors, fuel pump upgrades, exhaust changes, unusual hardware, motorsport use, previous poor software, or a fault that needs diagnosis before tuning.

What to ask

Ask whether data logs are checked, whether dyno time is included, who writes the file, how revisions are handled, and what happens if the car does not make the expected result safely.
